Kamala Harris’ entrance into the race is being celebrated by Democrats and their media allies.
But they might be taking a victory lap too soon.
Now Kamala Harris is facing one painful political reality that has Democrats freaking out.
Kamala Harris isn’t a political force
President Joe Biden ended his weeks-long battle with his fellow Democrat elites over his political future by ending his campaign and endorsing his Vice President, Kamala Harris.
Democrats were in the midst of a civil war over replacing Biden that was tearing the Party apart.
Harris entering the race was a chance for Democrats to unite and focus on defeating former President Donald Trump in November’s General Election.
Exuberance swept over Democrats and their media allies with a new candidate in the race.
And Harris was hyped up by self-proclaimed “journalists” as if she could literally walk on water.
But MSNBC data guru Steve Kornacki poured cold water on those fantasies.
Kornacki pointed out that her polling isn’t “really any better” than Biden’s.
“[Democrats] view this move as something that’s going to improve their chances in the general election,” Kornacki said. “That is based more on hope than it is the numbers right now.”
Kamala is unpopular for a reason
There was some expectation that Democrats could swap out Biden for Harris after the CNN debate on June 27.
Trump has little over a 1.5-point advantage over Harris in the RealClearPolitics polling average.
Kornacki broke down the favorable and unfavorable numbers of Biden and Harris.
“For Joe Biden, these numbers have looked like this for a long time. Very, very bad numbers. 36% favorable, 57% unfavorable,” Kornacki explained.
“What’s the difference with Kamala Harris? Again, not much of a difference. From 36% favorable to 38%, 57% unfavorable down to 52%. That’s still a majority of voters saying they have an unfavorable impression of Kamala Harris,” he added.
Trump allies are already running negative ads on Harris in battleground states to drive up her unfavorable ratings and counter Democrats and their media allies’ efforts to whitewash her record and agenda.
“So, again, from the Democratic standpoint here, they think Harris being reintroduced as a presidential candidate, getting a different look, they think these numbers can improve for her, both in the favorables and in the horse race against Trump,” Kornacki said.
But there’s no guarantee that will happen, and some evidence suggests that it won’t.
“But we don’t know. As you say, she has not really been tested,” Kornacki continued. “Her name never got to a primary ballot in 2020. She dropped out a couple of months before that.”
Harris went into the 2020 Democrat Presidential Primary as a top contender for the nomination.
She dropped out before a single vote was cast as she was polling below longshot candidates, like radical left-wing entrepreneur Andrew Yang.
“So, see how it goes over. Democrats hope these numbers will improve. There’s also a possibility they don’t. There’s also a possibility this rollout does not go well,” Kornacki concluded.
Democrats are touting Kamala Harris entering the race as a game changer.
But there’s plenty of evidence that says otherwise.
