Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has established a commission to “review” the Medals of Honor given to 20 US soldiers for their actions at the Wounded Knee massacre in December of 1890. Keep in mind that the values in 1890 were different than the current ones espoused by the Defense Department. And the propensity for this administration to rewrite history seems to be out of control.

Background: The US military actions at the Pine Ridge Reservation (also known as the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek) in South Dakota is referred to as a “massacre.” Hundreds of Lakota members, including women and children of the Miniconjou tribe (a subset of the Lakota Tribe) were killed.

Modern scholars estimate that between 250 and 300 Miniconjou were killed in total, almost half of whom were women and children. At least 25 U.S. soldiers also died, many likely fallen to friendly fire…The BIA attempted to portray the destruction at Wounded Knee as a battle, but later investigations and eyewitness accounts clearly established the event as a massacre. There was no significant armed resistance, because of the weapons confiscation, and the U.S. Army combatants significantly outnumbered the Miniconjou present. It is plausible that the 7th Cavalry committed this atrocity to avenge their humiliation at the Little Bighorn. Miles was appalled at their actions, stripped Forsyth of his command, and conducted an investigation of the events. However, Forsyth was deemed innocent and restored to his former post. Furthermore, 20 U.S. cavalrymen received a Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest honour conferred upon a member of the U.S. armed forces. In June 2019 several members of the U.S. House of Representatives introduced the Remove the Stain Act, a bill that would rescind those awards. The measure was cosponsored by Rep. Deb Haaland, one of the first American Indian women to serve in Congress. (Britannica)

The 20 men awarded Medals of Honor for Wounded Knee included some who bravely saved the lives of their fellow service members – actions still recognized today with the Medal of Honor. Others were awarded the medal for “gallantry” – which may not conform to the standards of today. Service members have been awarded the Medal of Honor for destroying enemy strongholds and saving the lives of fellow service members since the medal was created. How far will the Biden administration go in the quest to rewrite unpleasant parts of history?

Should we as a nation continue to erase history or should we learn from it and teach it truthfully? Military bases have been renamed simply because the men they were named after fought for the Confederacy. Statues have been defaced or torn down, the memories of their lives and sacrifices smeared for the same reasons. These 20 men from the massacre at Wounded Knee served the US 134 years ago and are long dead – should their names be stricken from the historical record at this late date? Should their families be dragged through the mud of public opinion now?
