Kamala Harris suddenly found herself as the Democrat front-runner after Joe Biden dropped out.
Now she’s trying to lock up the Party’s nomination.
And Kamala Harris got a reality check from an Obama advisor that left her fuming.
Not everyone in the Democrat Party is ready for a Kamala Harris coronation
President Joe Biden turned the election upside down when he posted a letter on social media announcing that he was ending his re-election campaign.
He followed that up by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democrat Party’s Presidential nominee.
Democrats and their media allies speculated for weeks after Biden’s debate implosion about what the process to replace him would look like.
Some argued for a mini-primary in which candidates competed with a winner selected by the Party’s elitist delegates at the Democratic National Convention.
But the clock is ticking for Democrats with their convention less than a month away and early voting for the General Election beginning in September.
Several Democrat Governors, who were viewed as potential rivals to Harris, including California’s Gavin Newsom, Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer, and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, all fell in line and endorsed her candidacy.
Former President Bill Clinton and his two-time failed Presidential candidate wife, Hillary, issued an endorsement of the Democrat Vice President shortly after Biden dropped out.
Harris added endorsements from all of the Democrat Party’s 50 state chairs.
It appeared that she had the Party united behind her, but one Democrat heavyweight told everyone to pump the brakes.
Former President Barack Obama, who was reportedly involved in the effort to oust Biden, released a joint statement with his wife, Michelle, in which they refused to endorse Harris and called for Party leaders to create a process for selecting a nominee.
Barack Obama’s top advisor says Kamala Harris must earn it
Former Obama Chief Strategist David Axelrod told his fellow Democrats that they were getting ahead of their skis by claiming Harris was entitled to the nomination during a CNN appearance.
“I think the focus of many leaders in the party is going to be singular and it‘s going to be how and who can defeat Donald Trump and that may well be Kamala Harris,” Axelrod said. “I think some of her supporters have done her a disservice because they say, well, she‘s there, she‘s historic, you can‘t bypass her, and so on.”
He cautioned against coronating Harris without seeing her strength as a candidate.
“The real case they should be making is why she‘d be the strongest candidate,” Axelrod explained. “And there are some really strong arguments to suggest she would be, but she might be stronger if she comes through a process that is open, and I noticed in her own statement, she said she wanted to compete and earn the nomination, and it would be good for her if that was the conclusion that people drew.”
Axelrod predicted that being tested for the nomination would be better for her.
“I think that people are going to take a hard look at this, try and open up the process, and see if others step forward,” he said. “Others may not, but she would be in a stronger position if she can say, I went through a process and I emerged as the nominee of the Democratic Party by dent of that process and not just as a gesture by the President to hand me this nomination.”
Barack Obama is still the most respected and powerful figure in the Democrat Party.
And he’s putting out signals that the Party shouldn’t rush to back Kamala Harris.
