Chairman Comer and Ranking Member Raskin Call on Secret Service Chief Kimberly Cheatle to Resign After Contentious House Oversight Hearing

In a rare moment of bipartisan agreement on Capitol Hill, House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-M.D.) have formally called on U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign from office.

The lawmakers fired off a letter to Cheatle after she demonstrated her incompetence in the position and refused to answer “basic questions” about July 13 during the Oversight Committee’s hearing, Monday morning.

During the contentious hearing, which lasted over four and a half hours, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle tried in vain to pry crucial facts about the attempted assassination of President Donald J. Trump from the Secret Service Chief.

About halfway through the hearing, Comer warned the Secret Service Chief that she was on thin ice.

“You answered more questions with an ABC reporter than you have with members of Congress,” Comer said. “You’re here with a subpoena, and we expect you to answer the questions.”

The Oversight Committee’s X account flagged several of the lowlights from Cheatle’s testimony:

“U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle CONFIRMS the roof the shooter was on was OUTSIDE of the perimeter the Secret Service was monitoring.”

“Secret Service Director Cheatle ADMITS to multiple lapses in security under her leadership.”

“The Secret Service Director DOESN’T HAVE a comprehensive timeline of events nine days after the assassination attempt on President Trump’s life.”

The bizarre and obviously disingenuous “sloped roof excuse.”

“Nearly 3 hours into this hearing and the only questions Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle will answer are: 1. Will you resign? No. 2. Are you the best person for the job? Yes.”

“On July 13, 2024, the United States Secret Service under your leadership failed to protect former President Donald Trump from an assassination attempt that took the life of Corey Comperatore and seriously injured at least two other people,” Comer and Raskin’s letter begins.

Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures. In the middle of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people demand serious institutional accountability and transparency that you are not providing. We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people.

Update:

Rep Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) announced on X Monday evening that she has filed a privileged motion to impeach Cheatle, forcing a vote within the next 48 hours.
