Oh, what a contrast between the two parties. For the Republicans, who were in tatters just two years ago, there’s a new sense of unity and purpose. For the Democrats, there’s only chaos and undercutting their own frail and failing figurehead as they seek to replace him on the presidential ticket.

Republicans Rally Around Their Humbled, Heroic Nominee

On Thursday night, Donald Trump brought the waterworks to millions around the country — including many predisposed to despising his very existence — as he emotionally and powerfully shared in riveting detail Saturday’s assassination attempt.

Clearly, this is a changed man. Who wouldn’t be after what he experienced? He spoke of love and the divine intervention of Almighty God in last weekend’s attempted assassination. He reached out to all with humbleness and sincerity.

Just showing up was an act of strength. So, Trump may be surprised to learn, was showing his tender side. (I wrote more about this in my recap of the speech: “Given a Second Chance at Life, Trump Opens His Heart and Makes the Most of the Moment.”)

From Kid Rock’s arena-busting rap to Hulk Hogan’s shirt-ripping, show-stopping display, the final night of the Republican National Convention put the party back in Republican Party.

For the Democrats, there’s only a dirge.

Dems Hound Their Duly Elected Nominee

Joe Biden is bending, but he hasn’t yet broken. The party apparatchik is openly saying it wants Biden gone from the race, regardless of the results of the the primary they just had. Heck, now they’re finally talking openly about his incapacity to serve right now. They are piling bricks on top of a man who would likely be felled by the balloons falling from the ceiling at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. It is not pretty. It’s not even democratic. 

Biden currently remains isolated at his home in Rehoboth Beach, both physically because of COVID and politically.

The latest report from the very connected Mark Halperin is that Biden may give in and pull out of the race as early as the weekend, “likely Sunday.”  The plan, as Halperin describes it, would see Biden voluntarily withdrawing, but not resign the presidency. A speech allegedly is already being drafted by Jon Meachem.

You can hear it now: “I’m stepping down because … well … anyway.”

However, rather than pass the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris,  Biden will most likely not endorse her, but instead push for an open convention with Harris and three other candidates vying for the nomination.  

What does that tell you? If it’s true, either Biden doesn’t think Harris is capable of sitting behind the Resolute Desk, or the powers pulling all the strings have already determined to cut her loose. Perhaps they just want to create the illusion of a “democratic” process while they work out behind closed doors who the next nominee will be. (They’ve seen the polls. According to a new one from AP-NORC Center, 60% of Democrats believe Harris would do a good job as president. Twenty percent don’t think so, and the remaining 20% don’t know enough to cast a vote on that topic.)

The Biden-Harris campaign refutes Halperin’s story. “Biden is running,” says cochair Cedric Richmon. “End of story.” CBS News reports Biden is “furious” about the story, as well as the coordinated effort to push him out.

However, listen carefully to Biden’s close friend and campaign cochairman, Sen. Chris Coons (D-CT). His response to the report is not a denial. Coons tells The Associated Press:

“President Biden deserves the respect to have important family conversations with members of the caucus and colleagues in the House and Senate and Democratic leadership, and not be battling leaks and press statements.”

Let’s translate: “The story is true, but give my man some space and dignity.”

So as we head into a weekend that may prove almost as dramatic as last weekend did, the Republicans are floating on the wings of angels and the Democrats seem cursed in every direction they turn.

It’s not getting “super-spiritual” to wonder if God’s hand is again at work in America.

Tucker Carlson spoke of that last night.

“Something Bigger Is Going on Here”

Journalist Tucker Carlson spoke eloquently about how Trump’s determined fist pump and miraculous survival last Saturday was a pivotal moment not just for Trump, but the nation.

“When he stood up after being shot in the face, bloodied, and put his hand up … That moment — that was a transformation,” he said.  “I watched the video of what happened in Butler, Pennsylvania. The effect that it had on Donald Trump, he was no longer just a political party’s nominee, or a former president, or a future president. This was the leader of a nation.”

“A leader’s courage gives courage to his people,” he said.

The miraculous sparing of Trump, his reaction, and the nation’s response struck Carlson as divine.

 “This doesn’t look like politics. Something bigger is going on here,” he said. “I think even people who don’t believe in God are beginning to think maybe there’s something to this. And I’m starting to think it’s going to be okay, actually.”
