Congressman Brian Mast of Florida, a well-known supporter of Israel First, is devouring a story by CNN national security analyst Natasha Bertrand that claims the Iranian government planned to kill former President Donald Trump on American territory.

On July 16, 2024, Mast announced the following via a tweet:

“Iran recently revealed plans to assassinate President Trump on US soil.” A medieval ayatollah is now brave enough to attempt to assassinate a U.S. presidential candidate. Our adversaries despise Joe Biden’s appeasement strategy.”

This story is questionable at best. Following the insane gunman’s July 13 assault on Trump’s life, several concerns arose regarding the security procedures followed by the Secret Service. But the most recent reports of an attempted Iranian murder divert attention from legitimate concerns over the July 13 security breach.

Here, let’s get real. Why would Iran carry out this strike using a lone freak from rural Pennsylvania? And why was Trump’s security detail so shoddy if the US intelligence community was aware of this assassination attempt several weeks prior?

Iranian grand strategy on the international scene is generally logical and circumspect, even though the removal of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani by the Trump administration is unacceptable.

It projects power in its historical zone of influence by using proxies in the Middle East, such as Hezbollah. But hitting Trump would be, at best, misguided for Iran. This hypothetical assassination would not only energize a large number of Trump supporters in the US, but it would also leave a power vacuum that would attract even more deranged neocons to the fold, such as Nikki Haley, Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, and others, who would not think twice about destroying Iran for their Israeli masters.

This entire argument seems like simply another excuse to raise the level of hostilities with Iran. It would be prudent for Trump and company to overlook it in favor of border security and military drawdowns overseas.
