President Joe Biden is attempting to save his collapsing reelection campaign by embracing increasingly extreme left-wing policy positions, but it has not been enough to reverse course.
Earlier this week, Biden endorsed federal rent control and called on Congress “to pass legislation presenting corporate landlords with a basic choice: Either cap rent increases on existing units to no more than 5% or lose valuable federal tax breaks.”
However, many liberals recognize that rent control has had disastrous effects nearly everywhere it has been implemented. Jason Furman, former chairman of former President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, criticized Biden’s proposal because “rent control has been about as disgraced as any economic policy in the tool kit.”
“The idea we’d be reviving and expanding it will ultimately make our housing supply problems worse, not better,” he added.
Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) also condemned it, saying, “This kind of cap would lead to less affordable housing being built and substantially increase [housing] costs.”
Despite these criticisms, Biden again leaned into the furthest left faction of the Democratic Party, as reports circulated that he is set to endorse radical reforms to the Supreme Court, including implementing term limits on justices.
Nevertheless, these attempts to appeal to the Left have failed to move the needle, and calls for Biden to drop out of the presidential race have grown louder than ever. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) privately told Biden it would be good for the country if he stepped aside. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) echoed Schumer’s sentiment and said the president should drop out of the race. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a Democratic California Senate nominee, also called on Biden to withdraw.
While Obama has remained silent, many of his top allies are publicly attacking Biden. Former President Bill Clinton and former first lady Hillary Clinton have remained similarly quiet, which speaks to their lack of faith in the president’s ability to win reelection. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has told Biden he will not be able to win reelection and that he would hurt congressional races.
Several top Democrats now believe Biden recognizes he has no path to four more years in the White House and expect him to drop out as soon as this weekend. Biden recently said he would consider dropping out if he were diagnosed with a serious medical condition, lowering the bar from his previous assertion that only the “Lord almighty” could convince him to step aside.

It seems more inevitable than ever that the president will suspend his reelection campaign, especially as former President Donald Trump and his running mate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) have energized Republican voters and begun their outreach to moderates and independents.
If Democrats want to win in November, they recognize Biden cannot be at the top of the ticket. Unfortunately for them, it is unclear if anyone will be able to save their chances in November.
