MSNBC's Joy Reid said that she fears that Donald Trump, who she claimed is the "greatest purveyor and promoter of political violence" since Alabama Governor George Wallace, will be seen as a victim in the media after he was nearly killed by Thomas Matthew Crooks in an assassination attempt.
Reid said that others were worried that the media "won't be the guardians of memory" in order to prevent Donald Trump from rewriting “himself as both the hero and a victim." Reid was speaking to other panelists on MSNBC when she made the comments to Jen Psaki as well as Rachel Maddow.
She added that many "who are the most vulnerable" will not know of the things that Trump has done or the "things he's promising to do." She then added that would be the case without the "guardian" of the media.
Reid then went on to suggest that because there were "men with long guns were standing outside of those polling places" in Arizona at one point during an election, that they were sending the message of "if you don't vote the right way, I'm here with this gun.”
She then added, "The idea of political violence that we’ve been nursing really since then is so dangerous. It's so dangerous that you cannot avoid the consequences of it even if you're one of the people promoting it."
The assassination attempt on Trump took place over the weekend, with a bullet hitting him in the ear when Trump turned his head. Two others were injured and a father was killed when he shielded his family from the shooting. Following the Saturday rally in Pennsylvania, Trump traveled to Milwaukee where the Republican National Convention is ongoing, and he is expected to formally be named the party's candidate.
