UPDATE 1:49 a.m. ET
The FBI has officially confirmed that the dead shooter’s name was Thomas Matthew Crooks. They released the following statement:
The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
UPDATE 12:56 a.m. ET
Next week’s Republican convention will be held two blocks away from the site where President Teddy Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt in 1912. Trump’s defiant raised fist in the face of a killer calls to mind the manly swagger of that earlier Republican populist president who famously said, “It takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”
Even the left-wing and Trump hating New York Times acknowledged the iconic image Trump presented today:
“Wait, wait, wait, wait,” the former president instructed, his voice a harried — but startlingly clear — command. Reluctantly, they halted. He peered out into the crowd.
And then his arm reached toward the sky, and he began punching the air.
The crowd started to chant — “U-S-A! U-S-A!” — as the agents inched Mr. Trump toward the stairs. When they reached the top step, they paused once more, so Mr. Trump could lift his arm a little higher, and pump his fist a little faster. The crowd roared a little louder.
[…]
Mr. Trump would not leave the stage without signaling to his fans that he was OK — even as some were still wailing in fear. And he did not just wave or nod, he raised his fist in defiance above his bloodied face — making an image history will not forget.

UPDATE 12:23 a.m. ET:
The FBI says the shooter did not have identification on him, so the agency is using biometrics and DNA technology to confirm his identity.
The FBI special agent acknowledges “it is surprising” the shooter was able to fire off several rounds. Again, the Secret Service is unable to answer any questions because they aren’t at this press conference right now. Which is pretty stunning.

UPDATE 10:38 p.m. ET
Breitbart’s John Nolte has been tracking violent left-wing rhetoric aimed at Trump and his supporters for years. Today he writes, “The corporate media have spent the last decade singling out one man for an unprecedented hate campaign, and on a beautiful Saturday evening in Pennsylvania, that hate campaign almost paid off.”
Read the rest here.
Just last month, The New Republic ran this cover story depicting Trump as Hitler.
We chose the cover image, based on a well-known 1932 Hitler campaign poster, for a precise reason: that anyone transported back to 1932 Germany could very, very easily have explained away Herr Hitler’s excesses and been persuaded that his critics were going overboard. Last week, President Biden told his donors on a private call that “It’s time to put Trump in the bullseye.”
On Friday, at the annual Sun Valley, Idaho, billionaire bash, top Biden donor and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman sarcastically quipped about making Trump “a martyr.”
Puck News reported:
Peter Thiel sarcastically thanked Reid Hoffman for funding lawsuits against Trump because they had turned him into “a martyr,” increasing his chances of re-election.
From the stage, Hoffman shot back with his own sarcastic quip: “Yeah, I wish I had made him an actual martyr.”
After the shooting, some Trump supporters openly blamed the media for inciting violence.

“It’s inconceivable that things will proceed as-is because the authorities will need time to implement enhanced protocols at the venue but also within the perimeter, at assorted official events throughout Milwaukee, and with all the state delegations,” the GOP insider said. “It’s not just about the safety and security of a principal. You have 56 delegations arriving and departing by bus. They’re sitting ducks for any copycats who find an elevated structure somewhere.”

We are starting to get a clearer picture of what happened. A closer review of the video–Breitbart News is working on cutting it up clearly and will post here when it’s ready–shows that as the sound of gunshots are fired Trump had just turned his head. Then, he grabs his ear before he drops below the podium and Secret Service agents rushed the stage to his side. The Secret Service agents then say “shooter is down” seconds later before they stand Trump up to walk him out. Trump is heard saying something about getting his shoes, and as blood is streaming down his face from his ear Trump can be seen pumping his fist in the air before he is escorted off the stage.
