President Joe Biden and his Mexican counterpart, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, have promised to reduce illegal crossings at the southern border.
“The two leaders ordered their national security teams to work together to immediately implement concrete measures to significantly reduce irregular border crossings while protecting human rights,” said a joint statement from the two leaders, who spoke by phone on Sunday.
Illegal immigration has hit new records during Biden’s presidency, and he’s hoping to reduce the number of crossings ahead of a reelection bid against former President Donald Trump.
“The two leaders discussed how to effectively manage hemispheric migration, strengthen operational efficiency on our shared border, and thereby improve the security and prosperity of citizens of both countries,” the statement noted.
Lopez Obrador, widely known as AMLO, is nearing the end of a six-year term in office and is limited by Mexico’s Constitution from seeking a second term.
He has been aggressive on the border, however, demanding $20 billion a year in aid, an end to the embargo against Cuba, and an end to sanctions against Venezuela in exchange for better cooperation on border enforcement. Trump has said the demands show a lack of respect for Biden.

Much of today’s immigration comes from people originating in countries south of Mexico, and Lopez Obrador is concerned with how it is affecting his country as well. A bipartisan congressional delegation met with him in Mexico City in January.
Biden’s approval rating on immigration is 32.2%, making it one of his worst-polling issues, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls.
