Biden Chaos Triggers Shift To Trump

Six states now have Electoral College ratings that lean Republican and support former President Donald Trump, while President Joe Biden’s prospects as the Democratic nominee continue to fluctuate.

The Cook Political Report changed the status of two states, Minnesota and New Hampshire, from “likely” to “lean Democrat,” while three additional states, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, went from being “toss-up” to “lean Republican.” Additionally, the 2nd Congressional District in Nebraska moved from “likely” to “lean” Democratic.

Regarding the electoral map, Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report stated, “The concept that the presidential [race] is a toss-up was a stretch even before the debate.” “Trump has a substantial lead over Biden right now and a far more likely route to 270 electoral votes.”

The electoral observer attributes the ratings changes to Biden’s subpar performance in the June 27 debate. There are doubts about the president’s suitability to help the party beat Trump in light of his unimpressive performance on stage. Despite a long discussion with House Democrats earlier on Tuesday, there is still no agreement and uncertainty about the solution.

‘Deluge’ of Democratic House defections by Monday, according to insiders we spoke with over the weekend, Cook Political Report Editor-in-Chief Amy Walter stated in her analysis. “Those desertions had just reached a trickle as of Tuesday morning. Nevertheless, a lot of anxious Democrats farther down the ticket and funders are holding out hope that Team Biden will recognize the signs and politely declare his withdrawal from the campaign when faced with declining polling and a hostile media corps. Right now, that seems like a long way off.

Walter went on, “We can’t ignore the unpredictability of the present, but we can attempt to carefully evaluate where things stand right now and where they are likely to go from here.”

Following the first presidential debate of the cycle, Trump’s advantage over Biden increased by 6 percentage points throughout the country. The former president’s margin shrank to an average of 4 points in states including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada in a poll conducted between June 30 and July 2.

Trump leads Biden by less than a percentage point in Wisconsin and Michigan and by more than three points in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, according to the Cook Political Report. Trump is leading Pennsylvania by 0.7 points.

Walter pointed out that even a 2-point movement has a significant impact on the presidential campaign because of the thin margins throughout the electorate.

Walter stated that if Trump’s performance in 2020 would have improved by seven points if he were to win the national popular vote by three points, for instance. In other words, every district or state Biden won by eight points or less was eligible.

Legislators, commentators, and strategists on the left have expressed concern over whether Biden is the party’s best bet for winning back the House, retaining the Senate majority, and retaining the White House. As they departed from the headquarters of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee today, a number of House Democrats refused to speculate as to whether the Democratic conference is comfortably trailing.

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD), one of the members, stated that the caucus’s discord can only endure for so long.

Ivey expressed his belief that the convention must reach a conclusion. “However, ideally, we’ll be able to sort of settle on this subject as quickly as possible.”

Democrats were expecting the debate at the end of June to provide the party with an opportunity to underscore Trump’s reservations and Biden’s administrative record, as Walter pointed out in her analysis. Since then, Democrats’ attention on Biden’s campaign has briefly relaxed Republican legislators on Capitol Hill.

Some Democrats believe that this language and calls from colleagues for Biden’s resignation will only weaken the president and the party.

“It is imperative that we refocus the focus on Trump,” stated Representative Jared Huffman (D-CA). “And it’s important—I mean, there comes a point at which winning needs to refocus the family discourse.”
