Any government that is genuinely concerned about protecting the environment would do everything in its power to help local farmers flourish.

The reason for that is very simple: locally sourced food has a much smaller “carbon footprint” than imported food that is grown half across the planet, then has to be stored, packaged, shipped thousands of miles by plane, boat, truck and train in order to reach the consumer.

So for example, it makes no sense to ship an apple across the planet with all the fuel-burning, warehousing, packaging refrigeration, loading and unloading that entails when you can grow one just down the road and ship it half a mile to reach the cosumer.

The same principle applies in fact to any produce that can be locally produced. Bringing in the same product by truck, plane or what-have-you from the other side of the world leaves a much bigger carbon footprint.

So, local products are more desirable and better for the environment than imports and any government that really cared about the environment, not to mention the prosperity of its people, would work very hard indeed to encourage, support and reward local production.

Therefore Tory efforts to sabotage and wipe out British farming made no sense in environmental – or indeed any other – terms and anyone who genuinely cared about the environment should be up in arms about it.

We can only hope that Labour is less two-faced about it, will buck up its ideas and sincerely do its utmost to help to flourish local food production and other industries, which would be far less wasteful and damaging to the environment. It will if we refuse to take any nonsense and demand it – or else!

And while we are at it, highly processed foods, soft dinks and all the rest have a larger carbon footprint that natural, organic untainted, unadulterated and un-processed food, not to mention cosmetics, cleaning products and so on and on and on.

Indeed, the additives in much of our criminally produced and marketed food make us ill and as we get ill, we need drugs, medical attention of different kinds, all of which add to the carbon footprint. Well people are less of a burden on the environment than sickly people.

Meanwhile, we as consumers can help our the planet by shopping locally, buying locally-made or at least British-made produce wherever possible and ethically made, healthy products too.

It is within our power, by taking responsibility for our own habits as consumers, to change things for the better.

It will be no good sniveling about how horrible the government is, when we took no personal responsibility ourselves.

As someone once said: “The degree of government is directly proportional to the degree of irresponsibility of the People.”
