After federal judges in two red states, Missouri and Kansas, decided to, on June 245, block the key section of the Biden Administration’s attempt to cancel student debt for some debtors through the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) program, a new version of which was to take effect in July, the Attorney General of Missouri sounded off on the Biden Aministration’s attempt to cancel student loan debt without the approval of Congress.

Commenting on the matter in a statement released by his office, Attorney General Bailey said, “During my time in the United States Army, I swore an oath to protect the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic. I took a similar oath to uphold the Constitution when I was sworn in as Attorney General.” He continued, “By attempting to saddle working Missourians with Ivy League debt, Joe Biden is undermining our constitutional structure. Only Congress has the power of the purse, not the President. Today’s ruling was a huge win for the rule of law, and for every American who Joe Biden was about to force to pay off someone else’s debt.”

AG Bailey’s office also explained that the now-blocked program “would have cost Americans $475 billion – $45 billion more than its last unlawful student loan plan.” It added, “The United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of Attorney General Bailey’s previous challenge to the Biden Administration’s unilateral and unlawful wealth transfer of hundreds of billions of dollars in student loan debt. In a 6-3 decision, the Court struck down Biden’s repayment plan as unconstitutional, citing the massive $430 billion-plus impact on the federal budget without express authority from Congress.”

AG Bailey then appeared on Fox Business to discuss the student debt forgiveness program and why he fought against it. He said, “The Constitution makes clear that Joe Biden does not get to thwart Congress when it suits his political agenda. The Constitution will continue to mean something as long as I’m Attorney General.”

Continuing, he explained that he could not just stand by and watch as the Biden Administration saddled the country, including residents of his state, with immense costs that could have been avoided by simply making borrowers honor their debts. He said, “I will not stand by while Joe Biden attempts to illegally saddle working Missourians with Ivy League debt.”

He also spoke about how he served his country in the Army to pay for college, as did many others, but now debt is being forgiven for free. He said,”During my time in the United States Army, I swore an oath to protect the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic. I took a similar oath to uphold the Constitution when I was sworn in as Attorney General.”

He reiterated that the debt forgiveness program would have been properly in the realm of Congress, not Biden, explaining, Only Congress has the power of the purse, not the President. Today’s ruling was a huge win for the rule of law, and for every American who Joe Biden was about to force to pay off someone else’s debt.”

AG Baily had made a similar comment in a tweet about the matter, saying, “This student loan lawsuit is personal for me. I paid for my education in blood, sweat, and tears in service to my nation, as did so many others. It’s a slap in the face to every working American to be left with the tab for someone else’s Ivy League debt.”
