A Canadian National Railway (CN) train derailed in Matteson, a suburb of Chicago, causing authorities to issue a temporary evacuation to nearby residents.
According to CN, 25 train cars were derailed, some of which contained hazardous substances.
A CN representative stated, “One railcar containing residue Liquified Petroleum Gas leaked a limited amount of product. The product has since been contained, and there is no danger to public safety.”

A freight train derailed in Matteson, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, on Thursday, prompting some residents within a mile of the crash to evacuate their homes.
FOX 32 in Chicago reported that a Canadian National Railway (CNP) train derailed near the 21000 block of Main Street at about 10:45 a.m., according to local officials.
As a result, homes nearby were evacuated because of a hazmat situation, as officials were looking at a leaking train car, according to ABC 7 Chicago.
Residents within a mile south of Main Street and 217th Street were given a mandatory evacuation order, as were areas a mile west of Main Street and a quarter of a mile east of Main Street.

According to local news, the incident happened in Matteson, about 30 miles from Chicago, andinvolved a train from the Canadian National Railway Company. Officials at the scene were examining a leaking train car.
“We’re going freight car to freight car to make sure,” Sean Howard, a village spokesperson, toldthe Chicago-Sun Times.
A CN representative confirmed with USA TODAY that an estimated 25 train cars derailed and were carrying “various substances.” Officials have not reported any injuries or fires.
“One railcar containing residue Liquified Petroleum Gas leaked a limited amount of product. The product has since been contained, and there is no danger to public safety,” the rep said in an emailed statment. “CN is working closely with local officials and thanks first responders for their work.”
