Two men who dressed as federal immigration agents in order to shake down Latino victims were arrested by police in Southern California.
Anaheim police said Monday they took Laurentiu Baceanu and Vasile Alexandru, both 19, into custody on robbery charges after they introduced themselves as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and demanded valuables from victims.
Authorities said the suspects carried out two robberies an hour apart last Thursday where they flashed fake badges and spoke to the victims in Spanish before making off with their personal goods.
Police said they tracked the suspects’ getaway vehicle into Fullerton and arrested Mr. Baceanu and Mr. Alexandru late Thursday night.
“Anaheim Police Detectives believe Alexandru and Baceanu have committed similar robberies in Anaheim, Orange County, and the Western United States,” the department said in a press release. “Detectives believe Alexandru and Baceanu targeted Hispanic victims, and additional victims may exist.”
Both suspects are being held without bond, according to police.
