Rodriguez-Vazquez was taken into custody following the attack, and subsequently charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, violations of the Uniform Firearms Act, evading arrest or detention on foot, obstructing the administration of law, and a number of other offenses.
According to CBS News, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office revealed that Rodriguez-Vazquez's bail was set at $12.5 million.
The shooting occured shortly after 7:15pm on Saturday on the 3500 block of F Street in Kensington. The 31-year-old officer and his partner were conducting a traffic stop on Rodriguez-Vazquez when he made a phone call. Another vehicle showed up, and the occupants of both got out. While conducting a search before the car was towed, the officers discovered a gun holster. When the officers approached the crew to inquire about the equipment, Rodriguez-Vazquez jumped out of the car and fled the scene, firing three shots at the officers.
One of the bullets struck the cop in the neck, and he was rushed to Temple University Hospital's surgical intensive care unit. As CBS News reports, as of Sunday, he was still in critical condition.
After allegedy carrying out the shooting, Rodriguez-Vazquez broke into a stranger's home and barricaded himself inside. A SWAT team was called in, and he was apprehended a short time later.
"What this family has gone through is unspeakable," Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said. "It is unacceptable. We cannot have this in this city, for this family, for law enforcement officers in general. We cannot have this happening in our communities. My office intends to do everything we can to support this victim, this victim's family, this victim's fellow officers, all of law enforcement, and the communities that are most affected."
