Barely a day after Gov. Kathy Hochul looked to be joining Attorney General Tish James in going all-out against once-and-future President Donald Trump, the gov had a phone call with him that suggests she’s not going to be so foolish after all.
Yay?
Queens-born Trump, of course, loves New York City: It was only punitive taxes and outrageous lawfare that moved him to switch his residency to Florida.
And when Hochul called to congratulate the native son on his victory, their talk turned to collaboration — how they might work together to help New York.
(So much for Kat’s “anti-American” bluster!)
The gov mentioned the Second Ave. Subway, protecting the CHIPS act to keep bringing back manufacturing jobs from overseas with projects like the Buffalo-area Micron plant — and making Penn Station and our subway beautiful and a showcase to the world.
And Trump was sympathetic.
Yes, she also raised New Yorkers’ concerns about protecting their rights, but she surely knows that’s only an issue in fevered lefty minds.
Hochul’s new approach is right for the people of this state — and makes AG James look even more small and selfish.
James’ brand in politics may be waging lawfare in the name of social justice, but the political tides are turning that into a Bud Light-level loser.
Kamala Harris won New York City by a 37-point margin, well shy of the nearly 54-point one for Joe Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton’s almost-63-point edge in 2016.
And the statewide trend is just as stark.
As is the national one: Trump won a true mandate along with the popular vote.
Look: Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries will be minority leaders in the next Congress, so New York needs every friend it can get in Washington.
And the president-elect has now indicated he wants to help.
Mayor Adams got it from the start, pledging Wednesday to work with Trump “to develop a realistic and compassionate national strategy for our immigration system” and implicitly on other fronts as well.
Wise move: The Harris-Biden crew never helped NYC a whit in this crisis, and migrants now make up 75% of arrests in Midtown.
(Gotham also needs to compromise on “sanctuary” insanity: Undo the Bill de Blasio “resistance” expansion of those rights and return to the modest version set in place by pragmatic Mayor Ed Koch so the feds can help counter Tren de Aragua.)
Leaders who care about New York need to quit insulting and attacking Trump, and instead embrace what he can bring to the state and city.
Leave the bitter-ender posturing to the likes of de Blasio and other Red Sox fans.
