EXCLUSIVE — One in five voters in battleground states identified immigration and border security as their top concerns this election, according to exit polling conducted by a conservative nonprofit organization.
A Building America’s Future postelection memo, obtained exclusively by the Washington Examiner, revealed how significant of a concern the illegal immigration crisis and crime at the southern border are to average Americans in key states, an matter President-elect Donald Trump focused his campaign on.
“In our surveys from early October, roughly 20-25% of swing state voters stated that securing the southern border and fighting illegal immigration were their top issues,” wrote Ryan Tyson, president of the Tyson Group, who ran the survey for BAF. “This was true in states near the border like Arizona and Nevada, as well as industrial Rust Belt states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.”
Voters most concerned with immigration voted for Trump 80% to 100% of the time this cycle, according to the report.
“That’s because the profile of those voters is reflective of the electorate Trump worked so hard to cultivate: working-class men with little formal education who are concerned about losing their place in our society,” said the report.
Minority voters, including 55% of Hispanics, voted for Trump, according to Edison Research’s exit polls.
The conservative group put President Joe Biden on blast as he delivered his State of the Union address in March with a six-figure TV ad buy meant to remind the public of the implications of the burgeoning border crisis.
BAF bracketed the presidential speech with two video ads that outline how the Biden administration’s immigration policy has had devastating impacts on the public, particularly the family of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley.

Riley was murdered while on a jog in February, and the suspect in the case, Jose Ibarra, was an illegal immigrant who was released after crossing the border illegally. He was let go again by local police in New York City last year after being arrested for endangering a child while riding on a moped with his 5-year-old son.
BAF blitzed Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania with a five-figure digital ad buy for “Clearing the Way,” which targeted low-propensity Republican voters in the final week of the election.
