Following the results of the presidential election, the editor-in-chief of Scientific American went on a social media tirade against those who voted for former President Donald Trump, denouncing them as “f***ing fascists.”
As reported by Fox News, Laura Helmuth covered the results of the election in real time on her account on the social media website Bluesky. She started off the night sounding optimistic about Vice President Kamala Harris’ chances, saying “thank you to everyone who knocked on doors, sent post cards, organized, participated in get out the vote events, donated, registered voters, and just plain voted. I’m so glad we’re all in this together.”
Once results began suggesting that President Trump would win, Helmuth posted “welp. Gonna be a long night. Cheers, everybody.”
As the night went on and President Trump’s chances of victory increased, Helmuth attacked her home state and the voters who lived there, saying that “every four years I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect the people who stayed and are trying to make it less racist and sexist.”
“Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f*** them to the moon and back,” she continued.
Later, she issued an apology “to younger voters that my Gen X is so full of f***ing fascists.”
The day after the election, Helmuth shared an article from Scientific American by Pauline Boss, titled “Election Grief Is Real. Here’s How to Cope.” In her article, Boss described what she considered to be a series of losses as a result of a Trump victory, including “the loss of hopes and dreams and plans that they thought were coming from the other candidate; a loss of certainty in the future that was what they wanted; loss of trust in the world as a safe place; loss of feelings of freedom over your own body; the loss of support for people who have lesser means than the rest of us do; the loss of support for your neighbor and people who are different from you.”
Boss then described her reaction to the results as “a grief that remains unresolved.”
