Former President Donald Trump’s campaign dominated President Joe Biden’s campaign in May fundraising numbers, leaving the operation with more cash-on-hand for the first time in the election cycle, according to FEC filings.
Trump and his Republican National Committee brought in a whopping $141 million during the month of May, out raising the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee who brought in $85 million, according to FEC filings filed June 20. The Trump campaign and RNC now have about $170 million in cash on hand, compared to the $157 million cash on hand the Biden campaign and DNC have.
After a 12-person Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the case brought by Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg in May, the campaign saw a massive fundraising influx. In the 24 hours after the decision, the Trump campaign announced that it had raised $54.8 million.
Fundraising has continued to be the Biden campaign’s advantage as the president battles concerns about his age, the backlash to the Israel-Hamas war and the southern border crisis.
“Democrats will keep up. It’s not going to be a blowout, money wise, but they expected Trump to lose the ability to raise money by charging him with these over the top prosecutions,” Mark R. Weaver, a GOP strategist, previously told the Daily Caller.
“They didn’t realize that the liquid they were throwing on the fire was not water, but gasoline,” he added.
The Trump campaign is also coming off a successful April, in which it out raised the Biden campaign by $25 million for the first time in the election cycle.
The month before, the Biden campaign and the DNC raised $90 million and the Trump campaign and the RNC brought in $65.6 million. Biden’s campaign still had the cash on hand advantage at the time, with $192 million while Trump’s team had $93.1 million cash on hand.
“It looked as though [Trump] might get beat in the primaries by Ron DeSantis or someone else, but then the Biden White House and its allies started bringing bogus and over the top charges against Donald Trump, and it angered a lot of people in the middle who see America as a place where the rule of law and due process matter,” Weaver told the Caller.
