Non-binary black star of 'gayest Star Wars ever' complains in Juneteenth video that conservatives co-opted 'woke'

"Happy Juneteenth," non-binary The Acolyte star Amandla Stenberg posted on Instagram, "and to those who are flooding me with intolerable racism—since it took me 72 hours on my laptop to make this song and video, u got 72 hours to respond. and I expect choreo!!" And with that, she/they released a black and white music video shot on the streets of New York proclaiming how angry she/they is about slavery, how she/they're tired of being oppressed, and "so bored don't f*ck wit yo discourse." Then she/they goes about f*cking with the discourse.

In her/their video, where she/they complained about being criticized for a 2018 interview with "king" Trevor Noah, she/they taunted journalists for calling out her/their rhetoric as "propaganda" while "forgetting" what their job is by not "telling the truth." The interview was for a movie called "The Hate U Give," which she/they said was intended to "make white people cry."

The complaints about her/them, she/they said, are meant to "conflate our pain with violence and try to weaponize everything that we do. The desperation of oppressors is rising and now they holding onto any ol thing they can use. If you rely on misinformation, then that tells me you afraid of the truth."

But Stenberg, who also backed the Gaza protesters at Columbia, had a complaint of her own, which was the right-wing co-option of the concept of wokeness, which came out of the black community as a way to recognize racism, oppression, and to see through mainstream society to the racist undergirdings of it. "They spinning woke, bastardize it and appropriate it," she/they sang in the video she/they edited all by herself/themselves.

"Last I recall, woke was something we created. Speak truth to power. Keep an eye out for you silly racists and now they use it to describe anything they threatened by," Stenberg sang. The use of the term "woke" by conservatives in America came from those conservatives needing a way to identify critical race theory and the far-left progressive politics that have taken over the left wing. Since the left already had a word—woke—it made sense to use it.

Stenberg likes "woke," conservatives don't, but both are using the word with the same definition. "It was all about the people recognizing bigotry," she/they sang, "the power of community, not fodder for your clickbait." Stenberg doesn't realize that once a cultural concept or story or character is put out into the mainstream, it is open to be co-opted or remade, just as she/they and her/their friends have done with Star Wars, which was something George Lucas created.

She/they is also the one who got mad at Kylie Jenner for sporting cornrows. In Stenberg's mind, she/they is the only one allowed to co-opt anything. Stenberg is so oppressed that she/they've appeeared in several major Hollywood undertakings and has spoken at numerous charities on activism, race, and youth empowerment. Much of the backlash against the actress, who also starred in The Hunger Games, has been about the new Star Wars series, but for Stenberg, it's all about racism. In the diss track, she/they said that she/they is "sick and f*cking tired of repressing my rage," which she/they said sends black people "to an early grave."

About half way through her anthem, she/they takes aim at journalists, many of which, including at this outlet, have been taking aim at her new Star Wars spin-off The Acolyte, which she/they and showrunning Leslye Headland said is the "gayest Star Wars ever." In fact, the show recently brought preferred pronouns to space in the form of "he/they."

"Journalists I'm looking at you," Stenberg said, "did you forget it's your job to provide the truth? Spreading divisiveness, mining the metrics and data, seem you gave up all your ethics for money and views." Which is clearly the reason she/they released this song and video, for money and views in an attempt to become clickbait.
