In yet another rebuke of the left-wing pro-immigration agenda, the district attorney in the county where a nursing student was murdered by an illegal alien has lost her re-election campaign.

According to the Daily Caller, District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez was defeated by independent challenger Kalki Yalamanchili in a landslide. Gonzalez, who oversees Athens-Clarke County and Oconee County, frequently promoted left-wing policies that were considered soft on crime, with Gonzalez describing them as “alternative accountability-based measures to address most nonviolent crimes or issues presented by juvenile defendants.”

Current tallies have Yalamanchili leading Gonzalez by a 19-point margin, with 59.51% to Gonzalez’s 40.49%.

In February of 2024, 22-year-old Laken Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University, was murdered by a Venezuelan illegal alien while she was out for a morning jog. Her killer, Jose Ibarra, was indicted in May on multiple charges, including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and felony murder, among others. Ibarra had previously been encountered by border authorities but was released as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s pro-open border policies.

The case quickly received national attention as an example of the harmful impact of letting in millions of unvetted illegals, and was seen as a major blow to the campaigns of Joe Biden and, later, Kamala Harris.

“I really feel like we had the right plan on how to run this campaign,” said Yalamanchili on Tuesday ahead of the election. “We’ve had response the way we wanted to as an independent campaign from across the political spectrum, everybody from Sheriff Hale in Oconee County to Mayor Girtz in Clarke County.”
