Celebrities in Despair

Celebrities including Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen were leaned on pretty heavily by the Harris campaign for reasons that should be obvious. Not only did the campaign think their endorsements would help put her over the line, but also sending them out to make the pitch was a lot easier than sitting Harris herself down for an interview and risking a disaster that would be caught on camera.

But the outcome last night has come as a shock to many of the elite in Hollywood. Today they are expressing their dismay, despair and disappointment with their fellow Americans.

Rapper Cardi B, who had appeared at a rally for Harris, shared an Instagram video of herself watching the results with the caption: “I hate y’all bad.” When asked if she would appear at Trump’s inauguration during an Instagram live, she said: “I’m sick of you! Burn your f**king hats, motherf**ker. I’m really sad. I swear to God I’m really sad.”...

Actor John Cusack, who has long been politically outspoken online, wrote: “The fact that the country would choose to destroy itself by voting in a convicted felon rapist and Nazi is a sign of deep nihilism. To put it mildly.”...

Ariana Grande wrote in an Instagram story that she is “holding the hand of every person who is feeling the immeasurable heaviness of this outcome today.”

The Wire actor Wendell Pierce congratulated Harris for running “a great campaign” and warned of what will now happen under Trump. “Elections have consequences,” he wrote. “The Supreme Court will be changed for a generation. I’ll never see a moderate court again in my lifetime.” He also criticised Trump’s “racism, misogyny, xenophobia”.

There are many more like this. Stephen King has been outspoken on X for a while. Here's his take.

And here's British author Philip Pullman:

Actress Yvette Nicole Brown was outraged about the loss of Sherrod Brown.

Law & Order actor (somewhat ironic) Chris Meloni suggested Americans were dummies who'd been duped.

Actress Christina Applegate told Trump supporters to unfollow her.

Singer and actress Bette Midler went a step further and just deleted her own account. Maybe it will come back at some point but for now it's gone.

Writer and producer Adam McKay put out a statement that I actually think is on target.

Yes, lying to everyone for 2 years probably wasn't the best strategy for your party or your credibility.

There were many other upset celebrities but not all of them sounded hysterical. I don't agree with Jamie Lee Curtis politically but basically what she said about this is right:

So the results are in. Many will be celebrating, possibly even gloating over their victory. Many will be stunned and sad with the terrible feelings of the loss. That is the same result despite who wins because that's what America and democracy looks like. Has always looked like...

...what it really means is that we wake up and fight. Fight for women and our children and their futures and fight against tyranny, one day at a time. One fight at a time. One protest at a time. That's what it means to be an American. That's what it has always meant and will always mean regardless of the outcome.

Be gentle with people today. Be gentle with yourself today. Feel your feelings today but most of all.....Be an American today.

Again, I'm not looking forward to endless left-wing protests to come but she's right that when you lose fair and square all you can do is suck it up and vow to keep fighting for what you think is right. That's what Trump did after losing four years ago and it's exactly how things should work in a democracy. Sore losers who vow to leave the country (but rarely do) are just acting like spoiled brats. You don't always win in a democracy. For Democrats and their celebrity spokespeople, this is one of those times.
