It was a bold and risky move replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket with his vice president, Kamala Harris. She'd never been very popular, when she ran for president in 2020 on her own merits she dropped out before the first primary, and yet, after Biden faltered in his June debate with Trump—a debate earlier in the campaign season than any in recent memory—she was catapulted into a run for president.
After Trump's decisive win on Tuesday night, leftist pundits have perhaps begun to wonder if replacing Biden, the only man who has ever beaten Trump in a political election, with his untested underling was such a good idea.
On an NBC panel before the race was called, former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the wisdom of that move, and if it was being questioned. Trump later took home not only the Electoral College but the popular vote.
"Jen, has the conversation begun yet about Joe Biden and the decision to ask him to step aside?" She was asked.
"It will begin," she said, "It will begin depending on the outcome. And obviously there hasn't been a race called yet, if this is not a Harris win that will certainly be part of the discussion. It is—she's run a campaign over the course of 107 days. That's not something we've seen in history. And there will be lots of questions about exactly that—the timing and the impact of that."
Another pundit weighed in to say that Harris' chances, running to replace her boss while he could still run for a second term, were "nearly impossible." That is not the message the Dems, or the pundits, have been conveying since July 21, when Biden stepped down and Harris promised to "turn the page" on both his and Trump's presidencies.
