Initial exit polls have described the voter sentiment which led to former President Donald Trump winning an historic victory in the 2024 election, with one poll indicating that 8 out of 10 Americans wanted to see “substantial change” in the country’s leadership.

As reported by Breitbart, the Associated Press’s VoteCast poll surveyed over 110,000 American voters across the country. An overwhelming plurality, 40%, considered the economy to be “the most important problem facing the country.” On this issue, voters trusted Trump more than Vice President Kamala Harris by a margin of 52% to 45%.

The second-highest issue for voters was immigration, with 20% citing it as their top issue. In a distant third was abortion, with just 10% declaring it their top priority.

The exit poll also found that a staggering 80% of Americans said they wanted to see a “substantial change” in the country’s leadership and trajectory, with 25% saying they wanted a “complete and total upheaval.” This metric likely contributed to Harris’ loss, as the incumbent vice president failed to distance herself from the poor record of the Biden Administration, particularly with regards to the economy and the border crisis.

With votes still being counted, former President Trump was re-elected to a second non-consecutive term, becoming only the second president in U.S. history to do so; the first was Democrat Grover Cleveland 132 years ago, in the 1892 election. He flipped back at least three crucial swing states that he won in 2016 and then apparently lost in 2020: Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Although votes are still outstanding in the remaining swing states of Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada, the former and soon-to-be future president leads decisively in those states as well. He is currently on track to win with 312 electoral votes, even higher than the 306 he won in 2016, and is also projected to the national popular vote; as of this writing, he currently has 71.2 million votes to Harris’ 66.2, a margin of 5 million. This will mark the first time Donald Trump has ever won the popular vote, and the first time that a Republican has won the national popular vote since George W. Bush in 2004.

President Trump will be re-inaugurated as the 47th President on January 20th, 2025, alongside Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as the 50th Vice President.
