The Empire State Building lit up red for Donald Trump overnight as he won the key swing states of North Carolina and Georgia — sparking a frenzied outcry from Democrats who bemoaned the New York City landmark for “celebrating the end of democracy.”
The iconic Big Apple building turned red from 11:22 p.m. to 11:27 p.m. after it was announced Trump had secured victory in North Carolina.
“We will be sparkling red for the next 5 minutes,” the Empire State Building’s official X account wrote.
The landmark gleamed red once again at 1 a.m. after Trump gained another win in Georgia.
The Empire State Building noted on social media it would light up either blue or red for five minutes following victory in each of the seven swing states up until 2 a.m.
While the iconic landmark only lit up twice for North Carolina and Georgia as the election was called around 5:30 a.m., some democrats who were already devastated by Vice President Kamala Harris’ poor showing in the Big Apple expressed their disappointment over the gesture.
“Celebrating the end to Democracy. Wow,” one person snided.
Another social media user raged: ” THIS STUPID F—ING ACCOUNT YOURE LITERALLY IN NEW YORK.”
“May Zeus himself strike this building down,” another added.
Others took out their frustrations on the building, with one person writing, “Wow, now I even hate the Empire State Building.”
The Empire State Building’s account was then forced to remind social media users they made the decision to light up for the swing states ahead of the results.
“As a reminder, we will be sparkling for all battleground state calls from the Associated Press,” a follow-up tweet read.
