Happy Wednesday!
So how late did YOU stay up last night?
Whatever time you turned in, we’ve got a pot of The Brew for you.
Donald J. Trump Has Been Elected 47th President of the United States
Wake the kids, history has been made. Donald J. Trump — given up for politically dead a few short years ago — has been re-elected President of the United States. Unquestionably, the greatest comeback in American political history. Unquestionably, the prayers of millions for a free and fair election were answered.
What happened last night appeared to shock pollsters. Kamala Harris’s Blue Wall of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan didn’t just crack. It came down as if by the trumpets of Jericho.
Nationwide, Donald Trump just made too many gains with black people, Hispanics, younger voters, males, and Arab-Americans, while Harris “underperformed” Joe Biden’s 2020 results on all fronts.
In fact, Harris only won the youth vote by 8%, according to Fox News exit polling. Biden had the youth vote by 25% in 2020.
Trump even got 43% of the Jewish vote in New York. Some Nazi he is.
Shortly before midnight, The New York Times was giving Trump a 91% chance of winning, with a sweep of Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.
“She could not outrun the Biden economy,” CNN mourned — while failing to note it was the Biden-Harris economy. We can’t really blame her. Usane Bolt couldn’t outrun the Biden-Harris economy.
But even with the numbers looking so good, the memories of 2020 still haunted. Remember what happened overnight last time, that voice kept on saying. An early version of The Brew declared “it was still too early for Trump to call the moving vans to take him from Mar-a-Lago back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Still, the signs were there. Kamala Harris’s campaign stopped talking to the media. And Harris herself did not appear to talk to supporters gathered at her headquarters. Perhaps we should check the over-under on whether Harris had the kind of meltdown Hillary Clinton had in 2016. Personally, I don’t think so — though if I were Joe Biden, I’d want to keep my distance from her.
And now, the call is in. Donald Trump has won the presidency again. And added to his growing legend.
Our 2024 update on the presidential race is following the action. And you can bet The Stream team will be all over the results in the days to come. Certainly, we’ll have plenty more to say come time for Al’s Afternoon Tea.
One for the History Books
Donald Trump is only the second person in the nation’s history to serve non-consecutive terms as president. And J.D. Vance will become the first vice president to have a beard since Herbert Hoover’s running mate, Charles Curtis, more than 90 years ago.
The Senate Flips to the Republicans
One thing we do know: We won’t have to keep referring to Chuck Schumer as the Senate Majority Leader anymore. The Republicans have reclaimed the Senate. However, the final margin is still unknown. Jim Jenkins set the pace by winning the seat vacated by Democrat-turned-Independent Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Then Ohio’s Bernie Moreno defeated incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown.
Our 2024 election pdate on the Senate, House and crucial ballot initiatives has the latest.
The House Is Still Up in the Air
Since the existing Republican margin in the U.S. House of Representatives is so slight, and so many House races take forever to get a final count, particularly in blue states, we don’t yet know who will control that chamber. How wide will Trump’s coattails prove to be?
What I Am Looking Forward To the Rest of This Week
I’m looking forward to hearing all the excuses for why Kamala Harris lost. Already Joy Reid is screaming about racism, blaming white women for the “underperformance.” Which is silly, since Harris lost people of color in great numbers.
I’m looking forward to not getting any more election-related texts.
If New York Times projections hold and Trump wins the popular vote, I look forward to Democrats not talking anymore about the replacing the Electoral College with the popular vote.
I’m looking forward to Scott Presler being giving the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
I’m looking forward to seeing the little smirk on Joe Biden’s face.
I’m looking forward to having a president who doesn’t think the people he governs are garbage.
I’m looking forward to turning my attention away from the campaigns so I can look forward to Christmas.
More to come …
