An NBC panel questioned Tuesday whether Democrats’ push to remove President Joe Biden from the top of the Democrat ticket was a good idea as the results came in on election night.
The panelists suggested that the pressure by Democrats for Biden to drop out of the 2024 race may have backfired after Republican nominee Donald Trump won the key battleground states of North Carolina and Georgia, and is projected to secure several more swing states. House and Senate Democrats joined forces to remove Biden from the race after his disastrous performance during the June 27 debate.
“Jen [Psaki], has the conversation begun yet about Joe Biden and about the decision to ask him to step aside?” NBC News host Lester Holt asked.
“It will begin, it will begin depending on the outcome,” former White House press secretary Jen Psaki replied. “And obviously there hasn’t been a race called yet, if this is not a Harris win, that will definitely be part of the discussion. She’s run a campaign over the course of 107 days, that is not something we’ve seen in history and there will be lots of questions about exactly that. The timing and the impact of that.”
Another panelist added that it is “virtually impossible” for an incumbent party to win with an unpopular president. Harris garnered the lowest vice-presidential favorability rating in NBC News poll history with a net-negative rating of -17 in June 2023. The poll showed Harris had a 32% positive rating and a 49% negative rating among 1,000 people surveyed.
The vice president’s disapproval rating stands at 49.2%, while her approval is 44.3% as of Tuesday, according to FiveThirtyEight.
Biden announced his exit from the race in a July 12 statement amid pressures from his own party for him to drop out, prompting Harris to launch her candidacy following his endorsement.
