Cardi B tried to defend herself over reading her speech from her phone at Vice President Kamala Harris’ rally in Wisconsin Friday.
The fuss came after the singer spoke at the Milwaukee event and switched from a broken teleprompter. She stood there in silence for about a minute before reading the speech off her phone.
After she received online criticism, including from Elon Musk, who called her a puppet “who can’t even talk without being fed the words,” she took to TikTok to defend herself.
“I worked so hard, bro. I worked so hard on my speech and a lot of y’all talkin’ about like ‘Oh why are you reading it from your phone?’” she said in the video.
“B—-, I had to write that s— down,” she said.
She went on to say that she has three children and can’t remember everything.
“And you know what, I forgot what I be telling,” she said. “I’ll be like d—- I was in the f—— shower for 30 minutes. … But you know what, then when I be face-to-face, I be forgetting.
“So you know, when it comes to this s—- right here, I been knew what I been wantin’ to say, but I had to make sure I ain’t forget, so I wrote that s—- the f—- down.”
She said she was proud of herself for finishing the speech.
In a follow-up video in which she praised Ms. Harris, the rapper said she needs to give herself more “kudos.”
“Because sometimes I’m a little bit hard on myself, but like, yo, I really did that s— like,” she said. “Like a b— was really stripping on poles and all, and I’m here.”
She said Ms. Harris is a “f—ing boss” who means business.
’”She’s moving like she gotta prove a point. Once a woman feel like she gotta prove a point, we’re gonna f—ing step on it, and that’s how she was acting,” she said.
Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, said Ms. Harris doesn’t take no for an answer. The singer credited the vice president for changing her mind about voting.
“But Kamala, b—, you changed my mind and you said something that made me change my mind because a lot of people was acting blind to the s— that was happening in the Middle East,” she said. “A lot of people was actin’ blind and she addressed it.”
She defended Ms. Harris against the claims that she didn’t do enough while serving as vice president under President Biden.
“Y’all need to understand she was waiting for her turn. She was there, she was studying … she couldn’t do much, but now she finna do it,” she said, adding that Ms. Harris “promised” her that she was going to make changes.
Ms. Harris’ presidential campaign has been star-studded, with actors Will Ferrell and George Clooney, singers Beyonce and Stevie Wonder, and former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton showing their support.
