With polls increasingly showing former President Donald Trump as the favorite to win the election on Tuesday, the campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has resorted to sending campaign resources to college campuses in the swing states, in hope of turning out enough college students to swing the election.
According to the Daily Caller, one such focus is Michigan State University (MSU), located just east of the capital city of Lansing. Campaign operatives at the university have been falsely telling students that there are “dangers” to a second Trump Administration, in an effort to convince enough students to turn out and vote for Harris.
Michigan is one of the most highly sought-after swing states, worth 15 electoral votes. President Trump narrowly won it in 2016 before Joe Biden appeared to win it back in 2020. Of the seven swing states, Michigan is currently polling the best for Harris, with the RealClearPolitics aggregate giving her a lead of 0.9% over Trump. However, the former president has been closing in on Harris’ leads in Michigan and other states across the country in the closing weeks of the campaign; he currently leads her in the national aggregate by 0.3%.
“We know that Gen-Z has the power to keep Michigan blue,” said Stella Camerlengo, communications director for the Michigan Federation of College Democrats. “We saw it in 2020 with young people having the largest turnout in Michigan, and we hope to see it again in 2024. Because the election is so close and we are in a swing state, we have flooded our campuses with Harris Campaign surrogates, voter registration efforts, and holding other events to make sure young people are voting blue this fall.”
Multiple top Democratic surrogates have since spoken on the MSU campus in support of Harris, including Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Despite Harris narrowly leading in the polls, President Trump has managed to earn several key endorsements that could put the state back into his column. He was recently endorsed by Amer Ghalib, mayor of Hamtramck, the only Muslim-majority city in the entire United States. Multiple other Arab-American leaders have since endorsed Trump as well, citing Harris’ poor handling of the ongoing war in Israel.
