GOP campaign signs at a pop-up Trump store in Lynchburg, Virginia were vandalized on Monday night, with names being crossed out in black spray paint and "racist pig" being written on a Trump sign.
According to ABC 13, the building at the site was also spray-painted with an explicit message, which said in part, "f*ck Trump" and "f*ck your racist Nazi supporters too." John Hartzell of the Lynchburg Police Department told the outlet, "We are actively investigating it. Hopefully, we get to the bottom of it. As the officers investigate what took place here overnight, they will be going to surrounding areas and surrounding businesses to see if there is anything that could assist them in the investigation."
The manager of the store, Beth Hammond, told the outlet, "What's happened on our property last night is vandalism. Our signs have been spray painted with racist and all kinds of ugly things."
"It’s so inappropriate; it’s wrong to do what was done," she added.
Delegate Wendell Walker, who said he and his campaign were personally affected as they had placed and funded some of the signs, told the outlet, "This is not the way to express your feelings on here even with Election Day less than a week away. This is really sad, disgraceful, and unacceptable, and we have less than a week before elections. Let's hope this is the last of what we'll see here."
"Some of these signs we have to purchase ourselves from the campaign, so we have financial investments in the signs when they are put up," he added. "To now have the signs destroyed out here takes away what we are hoping will be a message to the voters."
The Lynchburg Democratic Committee released a statement on Wednesday condemning the vandalism, writing, "The Executive Committee of LDC joins the Lynchburg Republican Committee in encouraging Lynchburg Police to aggressively investigate this criminal act, urging swift prosecution of anyone who defaced the signs and painted vile messages on a building near Leesville Road or anyone who aided this childish behavior."
"The LDC has no knowledge of anyone who would do such a thing, and if we did know, we would immediately report them to the authorities."
