Vice President Kamala Harris, in a closing message on the campaign trail out in Nevada, leaned in on making abortion completely legal in all 50 states.
Ms. Harris, who spoke at a Thursday rally in Reno, called on her supporters to vote for a ballot question on a proposed amendment to Nevada’s constitution.
The provision would create a state constitutional right to an abortion until fetal viability or if needed to save the life or health of the woman, without interference from state or local governments.
“So Nevada, to protect your right to make your own health care decisions, vote yes on Question Six, and make sure you vote up and down the ballot to truly protect that right,” she said.
“And I will tell you, when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it.”
Nevada is among several states with questions on the ballot intended to guarantee abortion rights and to bring out the Democratic voter base this presidential election.
Ms. Harris made a previous call on her Arizona supporters earlier in the day to vote for a similar ballot question.
Ms. Harris has reiterated her accusation that former President Donald Trump supports a federal ban on abortion, referencing pages from the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied supporting a federal ban on the procedure and his campaign had no association with Project 2025.
“This is someone who simply does not respect the freedom of women or the intelligence of women to make decisions about their own lives,” Ms. Harris said Thursday of Mr. Trump. “We know that what He has planned includes a national abortion ban, restricting access to birth control.”
The Harris and Trump campaigns are pushing through major Nevada cities in the final days of the campaigns, including Henderson and Las Vegas.
The state has a massive service-industry population and both candidates are talking about their respective plans to eliminate taxes on tips for service workers.
Nevada is a key swing state of 3.2 million people and six Electoral College votes. Current polls show Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris in a statistical dead heat.
President Biden won Nevada in 2020 with 703,486 votes to Mr. Trump’s 669,890, winning just the two most populous of the state’s 17 counties.
Democrats consider Clark County, home to Las Vegas and which Mr. Biden won in 2020 with 54% to Mr. Trump’s 44%, as its best defense to fight off the Republican advantage in the remainder of the state.
