LeBron James is hoping Republicans will still buy his sneakers.
The NBA superstar formally endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for president on Thursday in a video statement. The video included clips of some of former President Donald Trump’s language about illegal immigration and excerpts from Tony Hinchcliffe’s recent performance at a Trump rally.
“What are we even talking about here??” an incredulous Mr. James wrote in a post accompanying the video.
“When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me,” he added before launching into Trumpian all-capital letters. “Vote Kamala Harris!!!”
The endorsement is unsurprising, as Mr. James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and the first player in league history to play alongside his son, is no Michael Jordan in the political realm.
Mr. James frequently stumps for liberal causes and Democratic candidates, not paying heed to a famed Michael maxim that “Republicans buy sneakers too.” Sports stars shouldn’t, in Mr. Jordan’s view, risk their good will with “half” their potential fans.
But Mr. James endorsed both Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton for president, called Donald Trump a “bum,” and told Mr. Trump that the invitation that championship teams traditionally get to the White House “was a great honor until you showed up!”
