GOP presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump has taken up a lawsuit against CBS News with only 5 days to go before Election Day. He's suing the network for $10 billion in damages with claims that the news magazine engaged in "deceptive conduct" and election interference.
Harris sat for an interview with 60 Minutes' Ben Whitaker. Clips of the interview were released in advance of the broadcast and those clips differed from the answers given to the same questions once the program aired. Attorneys on behalf of Trump said the issue focused on "CBS' partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion calculated to confuse, deceive, and mislead the public."
They further claim that the edits were in an "attempt to tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Party as the heated 2024 Presidential Election—which President Trump is leading–approaches its conclusion."
"President Trump brings this action to redress the immense harm caused to him, to his campaign, and to tens of millions of citizens in Texas and across America by CBS’s deceptive broadcasting conduct," the suit states, per Fox, which viewed the complaint. Trump was invited to go on 60 Minutes but declined to do so over the network's refusal to apologize for claiming the Hunter Biden laptop was potentially fake during the 2020 election cycle.
CBS has been accused of "news distortion" after they aired the two different answers. The Center for American Rights (CAR) filed a complaint against CBS with the FCC, demanding that "CBS release the unedited transcript of the interview to set the record straight." The complaint, CAR states, "cites long-standing FCC precedent that broadcasters cannot engage in intentional falsification or suppression of news and seeks an order compelling CBS to release the full unedited transcript of the interview."
"This complaint concerns an act of significant and substantial news alteration, made in the middle of a heated presidential campaign," the complaint states.
Trump's attorneys have demanded that CBS turn over the full transcript of the interview, which CBS has thus far declined to do. In the suit, the attorneys, per Fox, "asked CBS to preserve all documents and communications related to the interview pending a potential legal battle."
CAR states that in the 60 Minutes clip aired on Face the Nation, anchor Bill Whitaker asks Harris about her stance on the conflict in Israel and Gaza, and in response to her response, said "But it seems that Prime Minister is not listening."
Harris replied: "Well, Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region."
When the full interview was aired, Whitaker's question is met with a different response. Harris replied: "We are not gonna stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end."
Trump wants a jury trial and $10 billion in damages for what the suit claims are "ongoing false, misleading, and deceptive acts; the attorneys’ fees and costs associated with this action; and such other relief as the court deems just and proper," per Fox.
