A new survey has discovered that half of Generation Z voters have lied about who they voted for when discussing politics in their personal lives.

As reported by Axios, the Axios Vibes study, carried out by The Harris Poll, discovered a large and consistent pattern of voters lying about their political choices when talking to friends and family.

Overall, 23% of respondents say that they have lied about their candidate of choice when talking to someone close to them, while another 22% said they might potentially lie. This includes 48% of Gen Z, or “Zoomers,” compared to 38% of Millennials, 17% of Gen X’ers, and 6% of Baby Boomers.

“There’s a new privacy emerging here, where it’s far more convenient to either lie or not talk about it,” said John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll. “The new social etiquette is to be like Switzerland: Why do you want that heat?”

The study further found that 33% of respondents admit to not being close to certain family members due to political differences. Among Zoomers, that percentage jumps to 44%, slightly lower than 47% of Millennials. Overall, 58% said that the candidate they vote for is a private matter.

Broken down among political affiliation, 27% of Democrats say that they’ve lied about their vote, compared to 24% of Republicans and 20% of independents. Along gender lines, 30% of men admit to lying about their vote, which is nearly twice as much as women, at just 17%.

Aside from the question of the privacy of votes, the survey also asked voters for their top issues with just 5 days left before the election. Across all major demographics, the economy and inflation consistently ranked as the top concern, with abortion being in a distant second. Among men, the economy outranked abortion by a margin of 57% to 21%, while that margin decreased slightly to 53-28% among women. Among Republicans, 55% rated the economy as the top issue compared to just 13% for abortion; among Democrats, 55% chose the economy over abortion, at 33%.

The survey’s findings suggest that there is likely to be yet another polling error ahead of the election, as voters may lie to pollsters about their choices. This phenomenon has come to be known as “silent Trump supporters,” as voters who lie about their choices are overwhelmingly more likely to do so when they are secretly voting for Donald Trump rather than the Democratic candidate. This has resulted in Trump noticeably outperforming his poll numbers in the last two elections he has run in.

President Trump currently leads Vice President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in the RealClearPolitics aggregate of polls, with a margin of 0.4%.

The Harris Poll survey was conducted online between October 22nd and October 24th. Its sample size consisted of 2,129 American adults, with 1,858 of them being registered voters. The margin of error is 2.4% among all respondents and 2.6% among the registered voters.
