On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of the United States’ (SCOTUS) decision to allow Virginia to remove illegal aliens from its voter rolls was hailed by the state’s Attorney General as a win for election integrity.
As Fox News reports, Attorney General Jason Miyares (R-Va.) issued a statement after the Supreme Court overturned a federal judge’s ruling, allowing the Commonwealth of Virginia to proceed with its efforts to remove over 1,500 illegal aliens from the state’s voter rolls ahead of the 2024 election.
“This is just a huge win for the rule of law,” said Miyares in a statement. “It ensures that Virginia will be allowed to follow our laws that make sure that noncitizens are not on our voter rolls for next week’s elections, that we’re not going to be forced to be putting 1,500 plus noncitizens back on our rolls.”
“I’m very grateful that the Supreme Court recognized the importance of the issue and they made this decision in such a short timeframe,” Miyares added. “It’s really just a reaffirmation of our commitment to both election integrity and making sure that our electoral process remains secure for all Virginians.”
The case began when the Biden-Harris Department of Justice (DOJ) sued Virginia over its plans to purge thousands of illegals from the voter rolls. Last week, U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles, a Biden appointee, ruled in the DOJ’s favor and ordered Virginia to stop its purge program. The state then filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, while also requesting a stay on Giles’ ruling until the case is decided by the Circuit Court.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted Virginia’s stay application by a 6-3 margin, with Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson being the only dissenters. This ruling allows Virginia to continue removing illegals from the voter rolls while the case is ongoing.
Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-Va.) also issued a statement celebrating the ruling and praising Miyares’ efforts.
“We are pleased by the Supreme Court’s order today. This is a victory for commonsense and election fairness. I am grateful for the work of Attorney General Jason Miyares on this critical fight to protect the fundamental rights of U.S. citizens,” said Governor Youngkin.
