On Monday afternoon, shots rang out in the lobby of an office building in the northeastern Toronto neighbourhood of Don Mills. When police arrived on scene, three adults were declared dead.
A nearby daycare and school were placed on lockdown as a result, however none of the children nor staff were injured. The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, took was deceased due to suicide after carrying out the attack.
According to the Toronto Police Service, the incident took place shortly before 3:30 pm near Don Mills Road and Mallard Road. First responders including the Emergency Task Force and K9 unit got to work clearing the building, and when the all-clear was given, people who had been holed up in Northmount School and St. George Mini School & Infant Care began exiting.
Before long, TPS announced that "all children from the daycare and school have been reunited with their parents," and that TTC buses were on scene to act as shuttles if necessary.
In an interview with CP24, daycare supervisor Sarah Ashfield said the over 100 kids in attendance "didn't really know much what was happening," adding, "We kept calm and all of the kids are safe, and they're on their way home now ... that's all that matters."
One family told the outlet while waiting to be reunited with their daughter that the "came to Canada because [they] know it's a very safe country," but that now they feel "very unsafe."
While there will be road closures as police continue their investigation, the daycare is expected to conduct business as usual tomorrow morning, opening as it does every Tuesday, at 7:30 am.
This is a developing story.
