Pressed by NBC News’s Hallie Jackson to identify a single concession she would be willing to make on the issue of abortion, Harris rejected the entire premise.

“What concessions would be on the table,” Jackson asked about a possible legislative fix to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. “Religious exemptions, for example,” Jackson gently offered, “is that something that you would consider with a Republican-controlled Congress?”

Harris was having none of it. “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body,” Harris said. “Let’s just start with a fundamental fact, a basic freedom has been taken from the women of America,” Harris continued, “The freedom to make decisions about their own body. And that cannot be negotiable, which is why we need to put back in the protections of Roe v Wade.”

Which is a ludicrous statement on the face because Roe itself was a political compromise between Supreme Court justices with no basis in law or fact. Roe held that states could not regulate abortion in the first third of a pregnancy, could make “narrowly tailored” regulations in the second, and could legally prohibit all abortions in the final third. If the right of a woman to make choices about her body was so fundamental, why the sliding scale of when the state was and was not allowed to regulate?  

Harris, of course, wants to go much further past Roe and ban all regulations of the abortion industry. Not only that, she believes that abortion is essential “healthcare” and must therefore be paid for by taxpayers and that medical professionals and institutions must be forced to perform abortion, on demand, regardless of their personal religious objections to it. When Harris says abortion is “a fundamental freedom,” this is what she means. There simply is no interest in the world more important to Harris, than the interest of a woman to abort her baby.

The authors of the Constitution disagreed. There is a reason they made the First Amendment, the first of the amendments. “We hold it for a fundamental and undeniable truth,” James Madison wrote in 1795, “that the duty which we owe to our Creator, and the manner of discharging it, can be directed only by reason and conviction, not by force or violence. The religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man. … It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage and such only as he believes to be acceptable to him. This duty is precedent, both in order of time and in degree of obligation, to the claims of civil society.”

Harris would turn this fundamental insight on its head, placing the narrow policy preference of her elite coastal comrades in Berkeley, Montreal, and San Francisco over the fundamental freedoms of God-fearing Americans.

Under a Harris presidency, Catholic hospitals and doctors would be forced to perform abortions against their beliefs, abortion protesters would be thrown in jail, and Christian employers would be forced to pay for a procedure they believed was murder.

These are all complicated issues with trade-offs. State laws vary on when abortions can be performed, who has to perform them, and what exceptions should be made for both sides. But Harris is incapable of seeing any nuance here or on any other issue. 

Harris has spent her entire life in a far-left secular bubble. She has never had to seek conservative votes for elected office or forge consensus with conservative legislators. She can’t imagine any possible concessions to Republican lawmakers because she has no respect for their worldview. If Harris does manage to reverse the current momentum against her and win the White House, it will be a frustrating four years for her.
