During an interview with NBC News, Vice President Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), refused to agree to any compromise on possible abortion legislation for pro-life exemptions in the event that she is elected president.

As Fox News reports, Harris spoke to NBC’s Hallie Jackson about whether or not she would make any “specific concessions” on a hypothetical abortion bill in office.

“What concessions would be on the table?” Jackson asked. “Religious exemptions, for example – is that something that you would consider?”

Harris simply scoffed and said “I don’t think we should be making concessions when we’re talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.”

“I’m not going to engage in hypotheticals because we can go on with a variety of scenarios,” Harris continued. “Let’s start with the fundamental fact. A basic freedom has been taken from the women of America, the freedom to make decisions about their own body. And that cannot be negotiable, which is that we need to put back in the protections of Roe v Wade, and that is it.”

“But what if you can’t do that?” Jackson asked further. “What if you can’t get that passed, and you want to save lives in Florida and in Texas and in Georgia? What do you do at that point?”

“I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole with you right now,” Harris replied.

Abortion has long been virtually the sole campaign issue that Democrats have focused on in the 2024 election, as it consistently ranks as one of the few issues where voters prefer Democrats over Republicans. Democrats campaigned heavily on restoring Roe v. Wade after it was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022 in the decision Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

However, even recent polling has shown that former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric has seen Republicans close the gap with Democrats on the abortion question. The most recent poll by Atlas Intel, one of the most accurate pollsters in previous elections, shows that voters prefer Harris over Trump on abortion by a mere 8-point margin.
