On his latest trip to the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced on Sunday that the United States would be sending another arms package to the war-torn country, this time worth $400 million.

According to the Daily Caller, the package does not include the ability to use American-made long-range missiles for strikes within Russian territory, which has since become a top priority for Ukraine. The country has repeatedly asked for such missiles due to being unable to produce them on their own. But despite the United States providing well over $70 billion in aid to Ukraine since the war started over two years ago, even the Biden-Harris Administration has been hesitant to allow Ukraine to have access to such weapons.

“We need to have this long-range capability,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in September. “Not only on the occupied territory of Ukraine, but also on the Russian territory, so that Russia is motivated to seek peace.”

Secretary Austin has repeatedly dismissed the idea that long-range missile strikes in Russia will be a decisive factor in turning the tide of the war, saying back in September that “there’s no one capability that will in and of itself be decisive in this campaign.”

In addition to the demands for long-range missiles, Ukraine has been begging for a chance to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which has long been a red line for Russia. But once again, the Biden-Harris Administration has refused to give a specific timeline for when such a request can even begin to be processed, let alone approved.

Nevertheless, the $400 million aid package will include munitions, armored vehicles, and tanks, among other weapons systems.

Despite over two and a half years of war, the conflict has not advanced significantly in either direction, remaining at violent but sustained stalemate. Attempts at diplomacy mediated by the United States have been complicated by Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 election, thus guaranteeing that his term will end in January regardless of the outcome.
