Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign and its allied committees raised more than $1 billion in the third quarter, a record that arms her with a significant war chest to outspend former President Donald Trump, according to Federal Election Commission filings posted late Sunday.
The filings also revealed that Ms. Harris’ campaign alone raised $221.8 million in September, which was fueled by two star-studded fundraisers in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Combined, the two fundraisers raised a total of $55 million.
In contrast, Mr. Trump’s campaign raised $62.7 million in September, less than a third of Ms. Harris’ haul, according to the FEC filings. Mr. Trump ended September with $119.7 million in cash on hand, compared to Ms. Harris’ $187.5 million.
The Harris campaign and a coalition that included the Democratic National Committee, joint fundraising committees and allied PACs have brought in a record $1 billion this cycle. Roughly $633 million of that total was raised by the Harris campaign itself in the third fundraising quarter, which runs from July 1 to September 30.
The previous record was $888 million, which President Biden raised in the third quarter of 2020.
Mr. Trump’s two committees, which also split funds with the Republican National Committee and state Republican parties, raised a combined $157.6 million in the third quarter.
The Harris campaign is also significantly outspending the Trump campaign, spending $270 million in September. Roughly $222 million of that total was spent on media buys and production costs. During the month, Mr. Trump spent about $78 million, of which $53 million went to media costs.
Ms. Harris’ cash advantage began almost as soon as Mr. Biden dropped out of the race in late July, as her campaign benefited from a flood of small-dollar donations from Democrats who had soured on the president after his halting debate performance. She raised $126 million from 1.4 million donors within three days of Mr. Biden dropping out.
