Jamaal Bowman’s got to go and more: Letters to the Editor — June 16, 2024

Bogus Bowman

Rep. Jamaal Bowman must be defeated in the June 25 Democratic primary (“Bowman’s 2-face politicking,” June 12).

The Post’s coverage has focused on Bowman’s anti-Israel votes and statements and the fire-alarm misdemeanor. But another reason to vote for his opponent George Latimer is that Latimer is so clearly qualified to serve in Congress.

During my tenure as Greenburgh town supervisor, I have seen Latimer in Greenburgh a few times a week when he’s running and when he is not running for office. I have only met Rep. Bowman five times during his tenure in Congress — and he represents Greenburgh.

Free at last

Kudos to The Post for its recent editorial (“Attacking a Rescue?” June 11).

Sometimes I wonder if our world has been turned upside down. Instead of applauding Israel for rescuing hostages, many in the West have condemned the rescue mission because Palestinians were killed.

Like The Post, I say the rescue attempt should be celebrated by everyone who believes life means more than death.

Long COVID blame

I still wonder why former Gov. Andrew Cuomo did not use all of the resources available to him to reduce the deaths of hundreds of elderly people (“Andrew’s lies,” June 12).

He was given an entire medical ship, the Javits Center and several field hospitals where he could have isolated patients.

Instead, these facilities remained largely empty while he chose to write a book extolling his own extraordinary leadership skills.

Cuomo’s arrogance prevented any meaningful COVID policy.

Cease-fire misstep

I am dismayed that the Biden administration seems intent on pressuring Israel into a cease-fire with Hamas (“Never deal with Hamas devil,” Michael Goodwin, June 12).

Israel is being told to abandon the war with the task half-finished: Hamas’s terror infrastructure has not been fully dismantled. The blood of the next massacre will be on President Biden’s hands.

Join the club

Contrary to your editorial, “Vasan’s Dubious Mental-Health Vision” (June 11), clubhouses explicitly serve people with serious mental illness, especially schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and major depression.

They are a critical way for these New Yorkers to achieve stability via a supportive community. I should know: I ran the original clubhouse and grew it significantly — and as health commissioner have overseen a doubling in clubhouse investments.

For decades, clubhouses served only a few thousand of the more than 200,000 New Yorkers with serious mental illness. We’re fundamentally changing that — focused far less on size than on quality.

The Post criticized prior mental-health initiatives for large budgets without tracking outcomes. We’re bringing order and standards to the patchwork clubhouse system, with programs tracking clearly how well they’re doing for their members, including in preventing hospitalization, homelessness and much more.

We welcome questions about our vision, laid out in a comprehensive mental health plan. New Yorkers deserve an accurate representation of that work; The Post missed the mark.

NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, Queens
