Kamala Harris sat down with Fox News' Brett Baier for an interview on the network, in which she was grilled on questions of the border in ways that she has not been in the previous softball interviews she's taken on. The Vice President and Democratic Party presidential nominee was grilled over the border and illegal immigration, trans surgeries for prisoners, and the issues of criminals coming into the US and committing all manner of violent crimes.

Harris, who was tasked by President Joe Biden to deal with border security and the root causes of migration in March, 2021, was first questioned by Baier over the border crisis that has exploded under the her administration. Baier revealed after the interview was over that there had been four Harris campaign staffers off to the side who were signaling to him to end the interview.

"I'm talking like four people waving their hands like it's gotta stop," Baier said. "I had to dismount there at the end."

Baier asked how many illegal immigrants have been estimated to be released into the country, with Harris not answering the question and instead saying that "the point is that we have a broken immigration system that needs to be repaired." Baier answered his own question, saying that it is estimated that 6 million people have been released into the country as Harris continued to talk over him. He also noted how the Biden-Harris administration upon taking office immediately reversed a number of Trump administration border policies, including one that allowed people to remain free awaiting trial.

"Do you regret the decision to terminate remain in Mexico at the beginning of your administration?" Baier asked. Harris responded by saying that the "first bill, practically within hours of taking the oath, was a bill to fix our immigration system."

She claimed that the Biden-Harris administration has been focused on "fixing the problem," including "increasing penalties for illegal crossings" and going on to talk about a bill that Baier noted Democrats voted against in June 2024, when the Biden-Harris administration finally felt pressure to attempt to close the border they had opened.

Harris claimed that when Trump "learned about that bill," he "told them to kill it because he preferred to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem." The bill would have allowed nearly 2 million illegal immigrants into the country each year and ramped up funding for border agents and border judges to process immigrants faster.

Baier noted the death of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, for which two Venezuelan illegal immigrants have been arrested, and asked whether those families are owed an apology for allowing the suspects into the country. Those two suspects are believed to have ties to the Tren de Aragua gang.

"I’m so sorry for her loss, sincerely," Harris replied after a clip of Nungary’s mother speaking was played. "But let’s talk about what is happening right now with an individual who does not want to participate in solutions."

Baier also grilled Harris over taxpayer-funded sex changes for inmates which was allowed in the state of California when Harris was State Attorney General. She was asked whether she still supports such a move, which is also permissible at the federal level.

"I will follow the law, and it’s a law that Donald Trump actually followed," Harris said. Baier replied that "Trump aides say that he never advocated for that prison policy and no gender transitions happened during his presidency."

As Harris was pressed further, she said "I think [Trump’s] spent $20 million on those ads trying to create a sense of fear in the voters, because he actually has no plan in this election that is about focusing on the needs of the American people."

Harris was pressed on how four years of a Harris administration would be any different than the current administration in which she serves as second in command. This comes as an increasing number of Americans say the country is on the wrong track.

"Your campaign slogan is 'a new way forward' and 'it's time to turn the page.' You've been vice president for three and a half years. So what are you turning the page from," Fox News' Bret Baier asked.

Harris responded that she would be "Turning the page from the last decade in which we have been burdened with the kind of rhetoric coming from Donald Trump that has been designed and implemented to divide our country and have Americans literally point fingers at each other."

Baier played clips of Harris saying that she would not have done anything different than Biden over the past four years. "So you’re not Joe Biden, you’re not Donald Trump, but nothing comes to mind that you would do differently."

"Let me be very clear, my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency, and like every new president that comes into office, I will bring my life experiences, my professional experiences, and fresh and new ideas. I represent a new generation of leadership," she said.

When asked about which foreign country she considered to be the US’s greatest threat, Harris said "I think there’s an obvious one in mind, which is Iran," noting the recent rocket attack on Israel.

Baier asked Harris about critics who say that "you either relaxed or failed to enforce sanctions" in place on Iran, to which Harris pointed back to Trump.

"Let's go back to Donald Trump, who pulled out of a deal that would have actually put Iran in check, and it was during Donald Trump’s administration that we had an American military base attacked." Harris did not mention the botched Afghanistan withdrawal in the first year of the Biden-Harris administration which resulted in the deaths of 13 US military members.
