Chaotic scenes were captured at a UK airport as travelers were forced to stand in hours-long lines to get their belongings screened for liquids after the government announced a new carry-on policy.

Footage showed long lines Friday snaking outside Birmingham Airport in West Midlands, where there’s been confusion over a new rule that prevents travelers from carrying more than around 3 ounces (100ml) of liquid in carry-on baggage, the Sun reported.

“Carnage at Birmingham Airport. Three lanes of queuing at 4am,” said one traveler, Russel White, on X, where he posted a video of several lines forming outside the airport early Friday.

In another video, a female passenger claims she had to wait in line for hours due to the overcrowded security checkpoints and that she would have missed her flight if it hadn’t been delayed by 45 minutes.

It was the second time the airport had faced long waits since the Department of Transport made an abrupt change last weekend to its policy for traveling with liquids.

But airport officials said staffing issues were also to blame for the lines Friday.

“We’re really sorry that security queues first this morning were longer than normal,” the spokesman told the Telegraph.

“All passengers leaving BHX can only carry containers up to 100ml in liquids, pastes and gels in their hand luggage,” the new policy explained. bhx_official/X

“This was mainly caused by staff sickness, which we are working with our security partner to address.”

The airport said it installed new state-of-the-art security scanners to help implement the new policy.

“New security scanners are now in place at Bristol Airport — passengers should keep all items in their hand luggage, including liquids up to a maximum size of 100ml,” the airport said.
