According to a poll from a left-wing source, former President Donald Trump has a five-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris among Catholic voters living in the seven hotly-contested battleground states.

The survey published by the left-wing National Catholic Reporter (NCR) and conducted earlier this month by Mercury Analytics found that 50% of Catholic respondents living in the 2024 election cycle’s swing states supported Trump, while 45% favored Harris.

Furthermore, NCR’s poll found that in five of the seven battleground states, Trump led among Catholic voters.

Per the survey, Trump notably led Catholics by double digits in two Midwestern states historically considered to be a part of the Democratic Party’s “blue wall” – Michigan and Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, Trump led Harris among Catholics by 18 percentage points with 57% of support compared to the Democratic nominee’s 39%.

In neighboring Michigan, Trump’s polling lead among Catholics was 12 points – with 53% of support to her 41%.

Trump also enjoyed an eight-point lead among Catholics in the state of Arizona (51% to 43%), a five-point lead in Georgia (51% to 46%), and a one-point lead in North Carolina (47% to 46%).

Harris only led among Catholic voters in two swing states, including Pennsylvania, where she had a razor-thin 49%-48% lead.

Nevada – where Harris led Catholics by six points over Trump, 50% to 44% – was the main outlier in the NCR poll.

Harris’ lead in Nevada can possibly be explained by the poll’s finding that Harris led Trump among Hispanic and Latino Catholics 67% to 28%. About 20% of Nevada’s voters are Hispanic or Latino.

The NCR poll found that Harris also led Trump among black Catholic voters 77% to 16%. Although this is a seemingly wide margin, in the past several election cycles, Democratic candidates have consistently won black voters as a whole with upwards of 90% of support.

Meanwhile, Trump had a comfortable 16-point lead among white Catholics who responded to the poll, with 56% to Harris’ 40%.

The NCR poll’s respondents were also asked to indicate which of 14 issues are important factors in deciding who to vote for in next month’s election.

The economy was the issue that was selected by most of the Catholic voters to be important to their vote, with three-quarters of the poll’s respondents saying so.

Immigration / the border was the issue chosen to be important by the second greatest percentage of respondents (60%) – with health care, taxes, and affordable housing rounding out the top five.

Of the 14 issues listed, abortion ranked eighth in terms of importance with 37% of the swing-state Catholics surveyed saying it was important in deciding their vote. “LGBTQ+ issues” were dead last, with only 12% of the Catholic respondents saying it was important to their vote.

Furthermore, the poll found that “58 percent of Catholics in swing states think abortion should be legal” in at least most cases, The Hlll reported.

In a slightly different question, respondents were asked if they considered themselves to be pro-life. Fifty-one percent said they were pro-life, while 28% said they were not. The remaining 21% indicated they were not sure how to answer the question.

The findings of the NCR poll of battleground-state Catholics seem to be mostly consistent with a Pew Research Center survey from late August and early September of Catholic voters from across the country that also found Trump to be leading Harris by five points.

The Pew poll – which also included respondents in non-battleground states – found Trump to have an even larger lead among white Catholics compared to the NCR poll – with 61% of support to Harris’ 39%.

Last week, Republican pollster and strategist Patrick Ruffini shared updated data from Pew on X (formerly Twitter) that showed Trump had in a month expanded his lead among Catholic voters across the country from five to seven points.

According to the data Ruffini shared, Trump led Harris among Catholic voters as a whole 52% to 45%.

Per the data, he also slightly expanded his lead among white Catholics to, now, a 62%-to-36% spread.

The finding seems to be consistent with Trump’s apparent dominance among the predominantly white Catholic electorate in the two upper Midwestern battleground states.
