The Young Turks co-host Ana Kasparian opened up about her shifting political views with Jillian Michaels' Keeping it Real podcast, explaining how a 2022 assault by a homeless man in Los Angeles made her feel alienated from the Democrat Party.

During the conversation, Kasparian described feeling "politically homeless" and shared how the backlash she received from liberals after the assault played a key role in her reevaluation. Kasparian recounted the incident when she was walking her dog in Los Angeles and was molested by a homeless man. She described how, while picking up her dog's poop, the man came up behind her, grabbed her hips, and started thrusting against her. She was unable to defend herself and the man, and his companion, walked away laughing at her.

When she spoke out publicly about the assault, she said she was met with accusations from some on the left, who accused her of unfairly "painting a picture of the homeless community" and even called her racist, despite never mentioning the race of the perpetrator.

"That woke me up," Kasparian said. "Some of the people that I've associated myself with because I thought they were the good people….They definitely have stereotypes in their head and are totally blind to the fact that they have those stereotypes and go around accusing others of being bad actors when they themselves need to do the work.”

Kasparian complained about how politics includes efforts to "demonize and even dehumanize the other side" instead of engaging in a free exchange of ideas. "At some point last year, the other thing that really hit me was the difference between my upbringing and what the Democratic Party espouses," Kasparian added.

Jillian Michaels, who moved from California to Miami in 2021, echoed Kasparian’s concerns, citing California's soft-on-crime policies and leadership under Governor Gavin Newsom as reasons for her own relocation, according to Fox News.

"Nothing was crazy like this right?" Michaels told Kasparian. "Homelessness, crime, advocating for medicalization of children, advocating for late-term abortion?" Michaels also placed blame on California Governor Gavin Newsom for leading the “madness,” adding that “the concern is that it goes from California to a federal problem."
