House Democrats have said they cannont promising to certify the election results if Donald Trump wins in November, causing some of them to be caught between their own rhetoric about January 6 and their complaints about the certification of the 2020 election and their apprehensions to allow an outright win for Trump.

According to Axios, some Democrats are hesitant to certify the election of Trump if he wins in November. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-NY), the House Oversight Committee ranking member as well as the former January 6 committee member told the outlet that he would only certify the election if it was a "free, fair and honest election," much like proponents of election integrity laws have said in the past.

However, Raskin is not assuming that Trump would secure a free and fair victory. Trump "is doing whatever he can to try to interfere with the process, whether we're talking about manipulating electoral college counts in Nebraska or manipulating the vote count in Georgia or imposing other kinds of impediments," Raskin told the outlet in an interview.

The Maryland representative has also made past comments claiming that Trump could not legally be elected to president under the 14th Amendment. He said that “it’s going to be up to [Congress] on January 6, 2025, to tell the rampaging Trump mobs that he’s disqualified” before SCOTUS ruled that Trump could not be taken off the ticket under the insurrection clause of the 14th Amendment.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who voted to object to the electors for George W. Bush in 2005, told the outlet, "I don't know what kind of shenanigans he is planning," adding: "We would have to, in any election ... make sure that all the rules have been followed.”

House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-MA) also was hesitant about an outright certification of the election if Trump were to win. Questioning the integrity of the process, he said he would certify an election win for Trump "assuming everything goes the way we expect it to.”

The comments from the House Democrats raises questions about whether Democrats in Congress will accept the results of the 2024 election if Trump wins, which would go against one of the party's main talking points that has been used against Republicans asking questions about voter and election integrity laws.
