This is the time of year when contract holdouts become stories across the NFL.
The Jets are dealing with one in Haason Reddick.
Players who are unhappy with their contracts stay away from the team, putting the pressure on for a new deal.
Jets cornerback D.J. Reed is not one of those players.
Reed is entering the final year of a three-year, $33 million contract he signed in 2022.
He is due to make a base salary of $10.5 million this season.
He could be viewed as underpaid with the way he has played in the past two years. But don’t expect to hear that from Reed.
“I signed a three-year deal, so I expect to play three years here and go into free agency,” Reed said Wednesday at Jets’ mandatory minicamp. “I do love New York. I love playing here. I love the coaches, love the organization. Woody [Johnson] took care of me last time. I love my teammates.”
Reed, who arrived as a free agent in 2022 from the Seahawks said this time he feels differently about free agency and is not as worried about money as he once was.
“I feel like now for me, honestly, it’s more of a peace of mind,” Reed said. “Financially, I’m doing well. It’s less stress going into free agency this time for me. I love football. Obviously, we want to get paid and stuff, but for me, financially I’m doing good, so it’s not really stressful for me.”
Reed said he does not expect a new deal from the Jets but would be open to one.
“The ball is in the Jets’ court,” he said. “I love being here, but I’m not really stressing about it. I’m here. I’m going to be here in training camp. I signed a three-year deal here, so I expect to play my three years out and go from there.”
Coach Robert Saleh has seen a team that expects to do big things in 2024.
“I know our group’s confident,” Saleh said. “It’s a very confident group. And I think everyone’s champing at the bit to do what we were supposed to do in ’23.”
The Jets will have a team bonding exercise Thursday then disperse until training camp.
WR Garrett Wilson put on a show in practice Wednesday.
He had two deep catches that were beautiful. Wilson looks primed to have a big season.
Saleh said the plan is for rookie OT Olu Fashanu to work exclusively at left tackle in training camp.
