A new survey shows that young Americans who frequently use the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok are much more likely to get their news from content creators rather than actual news outlets.

According to Axios, the study from the Pew Research Center shows that at least 52% of TikTok users get their news from the app, compared to just 22% who did so in 2020. This includes roughly 4 out of 10 Americans between the ages of 18 and 24.

The report determined that about half of all American users follow mid-level content creators, also known as “influencers,” for news, while 38% of users follow smaller accounts. A mere 2% of users follow actual celebrities or brand accounts. Less than 1% of users follow actual journalists or media outlets.

Aaron Smith, managing director of the data labs at Pew Research Center, gave a summary of the report’s findings, noting that “to the extent that people are getting news about politics or current events on TikTok, it is coming from people who don’t necessarily look like traditional journalists, and it’s probably interspersed with a lot of very non-traditional content — like skits, funny dances or promotional content.”

A handful of reporters and media outlets have managed to garner larger followings on the app, including CNN, MSNBC, the Washington Post, and ESPN. Individual journalists who have found success on the Chinese app CNN’s Max Foster, with over 1.2 million followers, while Taylor Lorenz, who left the Washington Post last week amid an internal investigation into her social media posts, has amassed over 500,000 followers.

But the largest accounts on the platform still belong to content creators; this includes YouTuber Mr. Beast, with over 104.5 million followers, and celebrities Will Smith and Selena Gomez, with 75.1 million and 58.2 million, respectively.

Pew conducted its study by analyzing 227,946 individual TikTok accounts and taking note of which kinds of accounts were followed.

TikTok is currently going through a legal battle over a law passed by Congress earlier this year and signed into law by Joe Biden, ordering the app’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to either sell it to an American company or else face a total ban on use in the United States. TikTok has long been criticized by members of both parties due to a variety of concerns, including users’ privacy, the site’s security, and its role in increasing Chinese influence over social media.
