On Saturday, failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton admitted that the Left’s goal is to silence free speech on social media so that they do not “lose total control” over what the public thinks.

As the New York Post reports, Clinton made the remarks in an interview with CNN’s Michael Smerconish as she praised the efforts of several states that have implemented measures to crack down on free speech on the internet.

“We can look at the state of California, the state of New York, I think some other states have also taken action,” said Clinton. “But we need national action, and sadly, our Congress has been dysfunctional when it comes to addressing these threats to our children.”

To this end, Clinton advocated for the repeal of Section 230 of the Communications Act, a statute which protects online platforms from liability for third-party content posted on their sites which may generate legal action. Tech companies have repeatedly used Section 230 as a shield to protect them from any legal repercussions by blaming the individual users.

“We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn’t be judged for the content that is posted,” Clinton continued.

“But we now know that that was an overly simple view, that if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever they are, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose total control,” she added. “And it’s not just the social and psychological effects, it’s real life.”

Clinton was already facing widespread mockery for similar comments she previously made in an interview on MSNBC, in which she declared that Americans who use their First Amendment right to express their support for former President Donald Trump should face either civil or criminal charges. She justified this by claiming that pro-Trump content should be considered “propaganda.”

Clinton, who previously served as Secretary of State during the first term of President Barack Obama, and was a U.S. Senator from New York before that, was the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 2016. Despite virtually all polls predicting that she would win, she lost the election to President Trump in an historic upset.
